The complete guide to welding schools

Underwater Welding Schools in California

Underwater Welding Schools in California

Underwater Welding Schools in CaliforniaOut of the numerous trade schools and 2-year colleges offering welding programs in California, there are only two of them that offer an underwater welding program, and these are Santa Barbara City College and the Nat’l University Polytechnic Inst.

Santa Barbara City College (SBCC)

Situated in Cliff Drive, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College has recently been awarded the 2013 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. This is a great honor for the college, considering that there are over a thousand participants from all over the country. This award was rightfully given to the SBCC following these strict criteria:

  • student learning outcomes,
  • graduation or degree completion, and
  • success after graduation

It means that if you enroll at SBCC, not only will you be given quality training and education, but the school also ensures that you will gain employment after graduation.

SBCC offers a myriad of vocational courses, and one of these is their underwater welding program. Actually, this program is officially listed in their catalog as “Marine Technology.” This is a 32-week (or 2-semester) training program that prepares students to be commercial divers. If you are not aware yet, underwater welders are classified in this category. So at SBCC, you will gain training in preparation for a certification given by two of the most respected bodies in the country:

  • Assoc. of Diving Contractors, or ADC
  • Assoc. of Comm. Diving Educators, or simply known as ACDE

The Marine Technologies program of SBCC is fully and duly accredited by the ACDE plus two other organizations, the NAUI (Nat’l Assoc. of Underwater Instructors) and the ADC (Assoc. of Diving Contractors).

SBCC’s tuition rates vary depending on where you live. For residents of California, expect to pay at least $4,000 for tuition and a diving certificate alone. For out-of-state and international students, this cost is much higher, which is at least $17,000.

Aside from the tuition and fees, you will have to purchase a required set of equipment which includes the following products.

  • dive wristwatch
  • full wet suit
  • hood and booties
  • face mask and other accessories
  • weight belt
  • SCUBA regular assembly
  • depth gauge
  • gear bag
  • diving knife
  • and many more.

You can apply for financial aid to decrease your burden on tuition. Note that equipment costs may not be covered. To know more about SBCC’s Marine Technology program, you can visit their website which is located at http://www.sbcc.edu/marinediving/website/.
