Underwater Welding Schools in San Diego

Underwater Welding Schools in San DiegoSan Diego is known for its deep-water harbors, so it’s not surprising that this beautiful city is home to one of the only two underwater welding schools in the state – the National University Polytechnic Institute.

The National University Polytechnic Institute or NUPI, for short, is a nonprofit leaning institution whose origins as a diving school can be traced back in the late 1960’s. Since then, it has continued to produce high-quality graduates who have found success in different industries nationwide and around the world.

NUPI offers five different programs:

  • Commercial Diving
  • Advanced Dive Medicine
  • Emergency Medical Technician
  • Nondestructive Testing
  • Underwater Welding

As a reputable instiution, NUPI is accredited by seven accrediting bodies such as the ACDE (Assoc. of Comm. Diving Educators), the ADCI (Assoc. of Diving Contractors Intern’l), the UHMS (Undersea & Hyperbaric Med’l Soc.), and the AWS (Ameircan Welding Society).

NUPI’s Underwater Welding program prepares students with what they will eventually encounter when they are out in the field. The institute has a fully equipped 44,000-gallon training dive tank where students learn the ropes with the help of brilliant instructors. Students are also fully clad with the necessary diving equipment and welding gear so they’ll know exactly how it feels like to work underwater.

If you enroll in NUPI’s underwater welding training program, expect to get 90% hands-on training and the rest would be spent in the classroom to learn the proper usage of welding and diving equipment, tests, and exams.

You will also be given reading assignments, which are usually handouts taken from the Underwater Welding Manual of the US Navy.

The program lasts a total of one month. After that, you will be given a test called welder qualification test. You must pass the test and should obtain a minimum grade of “C” before the school can issue a Certification of Completion in Underwater Welding.

  • NUPI has a very simple admissions system. The following are the minimum requirements posted on their website.
  • must be at least 18 years of age
  • must submit proof of medical examination and drug testing procedures that comply with the ADCI’s standards / protocols
  • SCUBA certification (required before the third month of training commences)
  • Acuplacer test for students whose GPA is below 2.0
  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • adherence to protective gear and dress code policy
  • diver’s log book
  • a TWIC (transportation worker identification credential) card if you’re enrolled in NUPI’s Professional Commercial Diving course

Although NUPI’s website does not include information on tuition rates and fees, an underwater welding program is an expensive course. If you want to ask for financial assistance, the school may help through the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) program.

National University Polytechnic InstituteThe National University Polytechnic Institute has other campuses within the state of California. One is in Chula Vista, another is in Fresno, and two are in Merced and San Jose. But these campuses so far offer only one course, which is Emergency Medical Technician.
